Creating Wellness, Finding Balance will increase a provider’s skill and confidence to counsel patients regarding healthy lifestyle choices. Change is more about habit formation than knowing facts. In our beautiful retreat setting, with time for rest, reflection, and rejuvenation, participants will practice with tools and approaches that can integrate into a busy practice and patients’ busy life-styles. Using an experiential format and incorporating feedback from previous conferences, the sessions will build awareness of patient’s readiness, goals, barriers and supports. The focus is on healthy habits in the key areas of nutrition, exercise and stress reduction.
Goals of the Program
- Participants will increase their knowledge and skills, and learn to apply them in their own daily lives and in counseling their patients in the following ways:
- Set goals for healthy life style choices
- Identify small steps and support systems to improve life style habits
- Make healthy food choices for home meals and when eating out
- Incorporate 150 minutes of moderate exercise each week
- Use stress reducing techniques in everyday life
- Participants will increase their awareness of how their own habits influence their work with patient’s health life styles choices.
- Participants will increase their awareness of the mutual benefit of compassion to others and compassion to self.
With feedback from 2016-17 Creating Wellness Retreat changes have been made to the 2018 program which include: more small group and dyad discussion time, more on habit formation and using these tools with patients, and more free time during the program.
Prior to the opening of the program, registrants will be surveyed to determine both their entry level knowledge and skills related to the program goals and personal goals. Faculty will tailor and pace the program to address the individual data collected. Methods will include presentation of information through discussion and handouts, small and large group discussions, and role playing to increase skills and comfort with patients interactions.

What Matters and Imagine You with Ellen Barnett, MD
Goal setting through an interactive workshop where participants will develop their own Image of Health that represents what matters most to them. Participants will learn to use this process with the patients and clients as a powerful engagement tool.
Mindfulness: A Path to Stress Reduction
The pivotal work of Jon Kabot-Zinn showed mindfulness practice brings numerous health benefits. Several simple meditation techniques will be presented which can be used in counseling patients Rosalyn White, BFA
A simplified model of habit change is presented: Think, Plan, Act, Rest, Re-start. Tools for habit tracking, small step clarification, and positive reinforcement will be discussed in small groups and dyads. – Ellen Barnett, MD

Compassion is at the heart of primary care. The data support the concept that we are hard-wired for compassion. There is also concern re compassion burn-out and the risks to providers when compassion for self is not heeded. We will explore compassion, the data and the impact on our own practices. . Robert B. Healthy Movement: Tools for Keeping Us Healthy
Incorporating strength, endurance and flexibility practices into our exercise routines has been shown to enhance mood, energy, even cognitive function. Teaching Skills in the Clinic

Taking it Home: Making New Habits Our Own
Actually integrating new skills into clinical practice is challenging. Participants will identify a “To Do” list of tangible, achievable steps to apply these new skills. Patient situations, team support, and personal rewards will be identified. Follow up 6 months after the retreat will be conducted.
Pre and post workshop surveys will be collected. Format for 60-90 min Sessions (except for Movement Sessions) A didactic presentation giving research data related to the topic will be presented. Participants will break in groups of two and discuss opportunities and challenges, and specific techniques for application in their own lives and in coaching their patients.
Continuing Education Credits (CEUs)
Creating Wellness is being reviewed for CME provider acceptance for up to 11 Prescribed credit(s) by the American Academy of Family Physicians. Registered Nurses (RNs) CME have also been applied for. Please check back to see the approval status.
LMFTs & LCSWs can earn up to 11 CEUs. Nyingma Organizations is approved by the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapist (CAMFT) to sponsor continuing education for LMFTs and LCSWs. Nyingma maintains responsibility for this program/course and its content.
Dr. Bob Dozor is the founder of the Integrative Medical Clinic and has practiced Family Medicine for over thirty years in Napa and Sonoma counties. Even before attending medical school, he has held a consistent vision of building a healthy life style as the core of our best health, and applies this in both his professional practice and personal life. With his wife Ellen Barnett they have three children and three granddaughters.

A major emphasis of her practice is working with individuals to clarify and support their health goals. She is on the clinical faculty at the Sutter Santa Rosa Family Medicine Residency and developed the Imagine YOU program of the Integrative Medical Clinic Foundation.

Rosalyn White has studied meditation and Tibetan art under the guidance of the Tibetan Buddhist teacher, Tarthang Tulku, for over forty years. She holds a BFA in Fine Arts from the California College of Art and a teaching credential from UC Berkeley. She is currently Co-Director of Ratna Ling and has been teaching classes in meditation and sacred art for over 25 years. Shari Sunshine is the Director of our Mandala Wellness Center. She has a Master’s Degree in Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine from World Medicine Institute, Honolulu, HI, and is a Licensed and Certified Massage Therapist. She has taught Mindful Movements and Healing Qi Gung for three decades. She is the founder of Syntropy Insight Bodywork, an awareness-based healing art.
